Fiji - Much Needed Island Time

Although much of the focus on the crazy 444 plan for is on the running – the most difficult part by far is managing the travel.  Until this AM I did not know if I would be spending the day/night in New Zealand or Fiji.  My original itinerary planned for travel from Tokyo to Fiji through Auckland.  However, with the concern regarding dengue fever in Fiji I needed to weigh that risk against the potential cost of change flights.  In the end, the best information I could get suggested that the risk of dengue in the part of Fiji I was planning to visit wasn't that significant and I kept my initial plan with the caveat with the that I would remain in the beach area and not travel to other areas of the island…not much of a sacrifice, when you see the beach here.

I decided to get my run in early to allow me to focus to writing, travel plans, and email for the rest of the evening.  I am sure that after I complete my journey, I will be asked more than once, “What was your favorite run?”  In that case, running 4 miles barefoot on the beach in Fiji will be hard to beat.

Trivia -- Celebrities play an important role in Parkinson’s Awareness, offering a recognizable face that can engage large segments of the population to deliver a message.  In that regard, lists of famous people with Parkinson’s are easy to find.  These lists usually contain the name of Josefa Iloilo, who was president of Fiji 2000-2009 and subsequently died in 2011 at the age of 90.

As I had hoped, Fiji provided just what it is known for – a beautiful island on which to relax and recharge your batteries.  My only regret is that my beautiful wife, Lila, was not here to share the sunset with me.

COUNTY SPONSOR

I would like to thank good friends, Clark and Cara Trimmer, for their generous donation to 444 Parkinson’s Foundation to help expand the impact of Run-the-World 4 Parkinson’s Disease.  Equally important, I want thank them for their support in the planning stages of my project and the formation of the foundation.

  1. I agree, you'll see some incredible places this month but the sunrise beach run in Fiji will have to rank near the top of the most memorable. Did you run all 4 miles barefoot! Can't wait to read the Melbourne report, have fun in Singapore!
